Yang Xinhai: The Monster Killer

‘Yang Xinhai admitted to carrying out 67 murders and 23 rapes between 1999 and 2003 in several Chinese provinces (born 29 July 1968, Zhengyang County, Henan, China; died 14 February 2004, age 35, Luohe, Henan, China).’

He was so wicked that he earned the nickname “Monster Killer” from the media. Wang Ganggang, Yang Zhiya, and Yang Liu were some of Yang’s names. Yang spent his young years in Zhumadian, a village of 2,000 homes in Zhengyang County, Henan. He was the youngest of four siblings and came from one of the poorest families in the village. He has been regarded as an extremely smart, sociopathic, and introverted young guy. He quit school in 1985 when he was 17 years old, refused to go back home, and started travelling the country of China while working as a pieceworker. Hebei. He was detained for an attempted rape in his hometown of Zhumadian in 1996. He served jail for three years. Something occurs in Yang’s mind during this time. After gaining his freedom, he started a never-ending string of killings and rapes that will stain Chinese headlines for the next four years. The provinces of Anhui, Hebei, Henan, and Shandong were struck by an unprecedented surge of criminal activity.

At start, everything is done in the same way. Yang sneaks into victims’ houses at night and uses homemade weapons to kill everyone there (axes, hammers, and shovels). He occasionally massacres entire families. Each time following the killings, he turns up wearing new clothes and usually wearing oversized shoes.

Yang murdered a father and his six-year-old daughter with a shovel in October 2002, then raped his pregnant wife, who survived the assault with multiple head injuries. He slaughtered a grandmother, parents, two children, and two grandchildren on December 6 in the Henan hamlet of Liuzhuang. The grandfather, Liu Zhongyuan, gave the facts. The old guy said that they were due to move into their new house three days later. When the grandpa went to see his grandkids, he found his granddaughter laying on the floor with a hole in her skull. The entire room was covered with blood. Although Liu Zhongyuan’s wife was still alive, she passed away 10 days later as a result of her injuries and loss of speech. Later, Yang Xinhai admitted that he had actually used a hammer to kill the family, which he had then buried in a cemetery after tossing his clothing into a nearby river. He then took a two-hour stroll to the adjacent town of Luohe.

It wasn’t the first time. In a number of instances, Yang killed whole families in the same manner:

In Anhui, on October 1, 2000 (3 victims, 1 rape), on August 15, 2001, in Henan (3 victims, 1 rape), on January 6, 2002, in Henan (5 victims, 1 rape), on June 30, 2002, in Henan (4 victims, 1 rape), on July 28, 2002 (4 victims, 2 rapes), on November 8, 2002, in his home village (4 victims, 2 rapes, 1 injured), on December 15, 2002, in Anhui (3 victims, 1 injured), on February 5, 2003 (3 victims, 1 rape, 1 injured), on February 18, 2003 (4 victims, 2 rapes), on March 23 in Kaifeng, Henan (4 victims, 1 rape), on August 8, 2003, in Shijiazhuang (5 victims).

Yang was arrested by a police patrol on November 3, 2003, during a routine inspection of certain amusement venues in Cangzhou, Hebei. He was sought for murder in four regions, the police found after they arrived at the station. Yang promptly acknowledged. In the regions he visited, his brief but aggressive criminal career left a sizable blood trail: 49 homicides and 17 rapes occurred in Henan; eight homicides and three rapes occurred in Hebei; six homicides and two rapes occurred in Anhui; and two homicides and one rape occurred in Shandong. He frequently rode his bicycle between cities. His DNA matched that of the criminal’s at the scene. After declining to file an appeal, Yang, then 38 years old, was found guilty on February 1 of the following year and given the death penalty.

“When I kill, I feel the desire to kill again. This drives me to kill. I don’t care if my victims deserved to die or not. I don’t give a damn … I have no desire to be part of society. Society is not my problem.”

According to some sources, Yang was motivated to kill in order to exact revenge on society because he felt that society had harmed his relationship with his girlfriend. Later, other publications claimed that Yang’s activities were motivated by more morbid reasons, including a sick enjoyment of stealing, murdering, and rape. Although Yang has never truly discussed the reasons for his violent behaviour, he did make a comment that serves as a meaning for his motivations: “When I kill, I feel the desire to kill again. This drives me to kill. I don’t care if my victims deserved to die or not. I don’t give a damn … I have no desire to be part of society. Society is not my problem.”

  1. Psychopath serial killers and rapists all around the world have the same intent, they enjoy killing and are so normal about it with no guilt. The act of shamelessness they do is horrifying and sick. Such a disgrace and shame these people are to the society. At the end they get what they deserve “DEATH”. But they end up killing many innocents. Value Education is really important from the right age.
