Knowing Yourself – Interviewing Yourself

In this short essay, I will try to sum up the theme of “knowing myself” in my own words. Understanding yourself Knowing oneself is an essential journey that unfolds throughout our lives. It is an in-depth exploration of our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, strengths, weaknesses, values, and aspirations. Self-awareness is the key that unlocks the door to personal growth, happiness, and fulfilment.

“Knowing yourself” is as important for a human being as breathing is necessary to stay alive. If someone asked you who are you? You tell your name, address, education, father’s name, age, caste, country etc. in the answer. But is this your identity? sure not. What is your identity then? Your own identity is that which you know or believe or can say that you can trust yourself. If you haven’t been able to identify yourself yet, then it is important for you to interview yourself first.

Begins with introspection, the process of looking within and examining our thoughts and feelings. It involves noticing our internal experiences, observing our reactions, and questioning our assumptions. By taking the time to reflect on our thoughts and feelings, we gain insight into our motivations, desires, and fears.

Self-awareness also includes recognizing our strengths and weaknesses. We all have unique talents, skills and abilities that contribute to our personality. By acknowledging our strengths, we can use them to further our goals and make a meaningful impact in the world. Conversely, acknowledging our weaknesses helps us identify areas for growth and development. Another important aspect of self-awareness is understanding our values and beliefs. Our values shape our decisions, behaviours and relationships. They represent that which is dear to us and guide us in living a purposeful life. By aligning our actions with our values, we cultivate authenticity and create a sense of fulfilment.

Self-awareness is an ongoing process that requires constant self-reflection and self-observation. This involves developing a curious and non-judgmental attitude towards oneself. This mindset allows us to embrace our imperfections, learn from our mistakes, and grow as individuals.

Self-awareness involves recognizing our feelings and how they influence our actions. Emotions are an integral part of the human experience, and they provide valuable information about our needs and desires. By becoming attuned to our feelings, we can respond to them in healthy and constructive ways, which can lead to better emotional well-being. Knowing ourselves also means becoming aware of our prejudices, biases, and conditioned patterns of thinking. We all have unconscious biases that can influence our perceptions and decisions. By examining these biases, we can strive for greater objectivity, empathy, and open-mindedness. It allows us to interact with others more authentically and fosters deeper relationships.

The effects of our past experiences on our present behaviour

Furthermore, understanding ourselves involves recognizing the influence of our past experiences on our present behaviour. Our upbringing, cultural background, and significant life events shape our beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours. By exploring our past, we can gain clarity about the way we react and make conscious choices about how we want to move forward. Self-knowledge extends to our physical well-being as well. To maintain good health it is important to understand our bodies, their needs and limitations. By listening to our bodies and nurturing them through proper nutrition, exercise and rest, we can optimize our physical well-being and support our overall growth and development.

We can understand this through this story: There was a poor man in a village. For several generations his family was living a life of poverty and misery. As a result, he did not receive any kind of education in his age. He also had to live by begging for the maintenance of the family. That man got married and also had a son. With time he also grew up. His parents wanted that their son should at least read and write something. But due to lack of means, he could not arrange for his son’s education. Forced to be young, he also had to live by begging. But it seemed humiliating to him. Wherever he used to go, children of his age used to tease him by telling different things. Due to this he was becoming insane. He could not understand what to do?

One day he didn’t go to beg, so his father asked why didn’t you go today. In reply he said that he would no longer go for begging. Because the children of the village tease him by telling different things. Now he wants to study and wants to become a big man after studying so that the future of his family can improve. In the beginning, he started working as a laborer. But he used to get tired from the day’s work and used to sleep early at night due to which he could not read. He thought of a new idea, borrowed some money from someone and started a paan shop at the busiest square of the village. He started earning a good income from it. The expenses of his house also started running and he also got time for studies. Gradually his thinking started becoming successful and the family condition also started improving. His father also stopped begging and started helping him. Due to which he got enough time to study. One day such a time came that his studies were completed, he had given the bank exam, he was successful in that too and he got a job as a clerk in the bank.

It means that he recognized himself that he can read and can move forward by reading. He created a desire in himself and gave it a shape. He also got the support of time and his own people and he became successful.

Ultimately, knowing yourself is a multifaceted and lifelong journey. This includes introspection, recognizing strengths and weaknesses, understanding values and beliefs, accepting and managing emotions, examining biases, learning from past experiences, and caring for our physical well-being. By embarking on this journey of self-discovery, we empower ourselves to live with authenticity, purpose, and fulfilment. It is a good journey, as it opens doors to personal growth and enables us to make a positive impact on ourselves and the world around us.
